Why KINGS PIECE cares about your health:

Its more than just about being another brand, it's more than just a community that wants to evoke positive change for the environment, we too care for the individual man's health. As not only does plastic affect a man's health it also is detrimental to his family's health and can impact his legacy for many generations. We are about being your best self and that involves both your mental and physical well-being which affects your success in life.

Plastic has become an integral part of our modern lives so much so that we don't realise it's all around us.

Think about it for a second look around you if you are at home, count how many things are plastic in the room you're in, or if you are out on a walk. Look at how many things you come across on the floor that are plastic and that people have just chucked onto the floor. Its convenient and pervasive use comes at a high cost to both the environment and our health. In this article, we delve into the alarming repercussions of plastic on our planet and our bodies. From its contribution to environmental pollution to its potent health risks, we uncover the reasons why we must urgently address the plastic crisis, what you the individual can do about it, and solutions for swapping out everyday items for plastic-free ones.

Environmental Pollution:

Plastic is notorious for its durability, which ironically becomes its most detrimental quality when it comes to the environment. It takes hundreds of years for plastic to break down and that's not even talking about decomposing, just strictly being broken down into smaller microplastic pieces that lead to its accumulation in landfills, water bodies, and natural ecosystems. This pollution poses a severe threat to wildlife, as marine animals mistake plastic for food or become entangled in it. Moreover, plastic debris disrupts the delicate balance of ecosystems, leading to the loss of biodiversity and ecological imbalances. It's not just marine life but wildlife too, microplastics are a massive issue that works its way up the food chain.

Whether it's land animals or marine animals, plastic has infected everything, it is a modern-day epidemic disease that no one is fully conscious about. Plastic is everywhere and we use it for everything but we don't ever stop to realise what we are doing and why, in fact, we use plastic so much that it has become second nature and something we don't think twice about as we use it for shopping, for food, for water, to contain things. We even use it for children's toys, which when you think about it, its absurd since we know children love to eat and swallow all types of things they shouldn't. If you could see the physical effects internally as to the damage it causes to humans and yourself I guarantee you would be doing a lot more to avoid plastic. i#In fact you'd treat it like the plague!

A Mans integrity

Now you are probably thinking why should I care about other people's mess? I can't change anything and it's not my responsibility. Well, we challenge you on that, be better than others around you in fact be an inspiration for others to change their way of thinking too as they see you make a dedication to yourself and your family's health. We as Men and leaders of our homes, businesses, clubs, etc have to take responsibility and accountability to make the change in how we consume our goods as we can’t rely on governing bodies to enforce these changes.

Even in silence or when no one is looking, be the Man who defies normality and picks up that litter that's on the floor. I assure you you'll feel much better about yourself it's worth the small dopamine hit knowing you're doing your part regardless of whether others are or not, or if anyone even sees you do it, as it's not for others' gratification but what is right and your duty to the environment that allows you to live.

Plastic in Our Oceans:

One of the most significant environmental concerns is the immense presence of plastic in our oceans. The World Economic Forum estimates that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish if current trends continue. Plastic pollution not only harms marine life but also contaminates the food chain. Microplastics, tiny particles resulting from the breakdown of larger plastic items, have infiltrated the marine ecosystem, and subsequently, our seafood is not just seafood either. Millions of microplastics are in the ocean floating around. When we jump into the sea for a swim we will ingest some of that seawater that also has microplastics in it, do you see now how it affects everything even the things you weren't or didn't think of are now major health concerns. This ingestion of microplastics poses risks to human health, which we will explore further.

Plastic Waste, Land Pollution and Your Clothing:

The improper disposal of plastic waste contributes to land pollution, with devastating consequences for ecosystems and human communities. Plastic litter not only blights landscapes but also seeps into the soil, contaminating groundwater sources and agricultural lands. The use of plastic in agriculture, such as single-use plastic mulch films, further exacerbates the problem. This contamination compromises soil fertility, affects crop growth, and has indirect implications for food security. One of the single worst things and is the 2nd biggest leading contributor to our environment is the fashion industry, yep that's right clothing, now your thinking well how? Now in its simplicity, a lot of clothing is made out of polymers, especially in the fast fashion and fitness industry, Polymer-based clothing has gained popularity for its affordability, durability, and versatility. However, recent research has raised concerns about the potential health effects associated with these synthetic fabrics.

Here are a few key factors impacting the body in regards to plastics in clothing:

  1. Skin Irritation and Allergic Reactions: Polymer-based fabrics, such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic, are known to trap moisture against the skin, hindering breathability. This can create a favourable environment for bacterial growth and lead to skin irritation, itching, and rashes. Furthermore, some individuals may develop allergic reactions to the chemicals used in the manufacturing process of these synthetic textiles. Opting for natural fibres like cotton, modal, bamboo, etc can be a healthier alternative, allowing the skin to breathe and reducing the risk of irritation.
  2. Heat and Moisture Trapping: Polymer-based clothing tends to lack breathability, trapping heat and moisture against the body. This can lead to discomfort, excessive sweating, and an increased risk of skin infections. Prolonged exposure to heat and moisture may also disrupt the body's natural thermoregulation process, potentially contributing to heat-related illnesses. When engaging in physical activities or during hot weather, choosing moisture-wicking fabrics or natural fibres can help maintain a more comfortable body temperature.
  3. Chemical Exposure: Polymer-based fabrics are often treated with various chemicals during the manufacturing process, including flame retardants, stain repellents, and antimicrobial agents. These chemicals can leach out of the fabric over time, potentially coming into contact with our skin and being absorbed by our bodies. Some of these substances have been linked to adverse health effects, including endocrine disruption, reproductive issues, and potential carcinogenicity. Opting for certified organic or naturally dyed clothing can minimise exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.
  4. Microplastic Pollution: Polymer-based clothing, particularly those made of synthetic fibres like polyester and acrylic, shed microplastic particles during washing. These microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic, can enter water bodies and eventually find their way into the food chain. Reducing the use or purchasing of these plastic-based clothing items will be crucial for boosting your health as clothing frays and gets worn out over time these microplastic strands will be inhaled or ingested accidentally, in fact, have you ever seen the dust air particles in the sunlight this is from your environment and so if you know you wear clothing that is not natural or organic then you will breathing microplastics into your body which will disrupt your bodies hormone balance which can and will lead to imbalances that may compound over time. So what's the solution stop getting persuaded and pressured to buy the next coolest item and instead buy clothing from companies that use natural and organic materials not only will this encourage other companies to do the same but also these items are better quality and last for a long time meaning you won't have to keep buying new clothes. Stop looking for instant gratification and start caring more for your health and others.

Health Risks Associated with Plastic:

Plastic poses a range of potential health risks due to its composition and the chemicals it contains. Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates are two commonly found chemicals in plastic products that have raised concerns. These chemicals can leach into food and beverages, especially when exposed to heat or acidic conditions, posing risks of endocrine disruption, developmental issues, and reproductive disorders. Additionally, microplastics, both ingested through food and air, may accumulate in our bodies over time, potentially leading to inflammation, oxidative stress, and other adverse health effects.

Emerging scientific research has shed light on the detrimental impact of plastic on men's health. From potential disruptions in hormone balance to increased risks of reproductive disorders, The scientific evidence is there for you to see for yourself why plastic is a significant threat to men's well-being not just in the future, not just in a couple of years but right now, right this second, whilst you're reading this.

Plastic and your hormones

  • Endocrine Disruption: Plastic products, particularly those containing chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, can act as endocrine disruptors. These chemicals mimic or interfere with the hormones in the body, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances. Studies have linked exposure to BPA and phthalates with adverse effects on male reproductive health, including reduced sperm quality, decreased testosterone levels, and impaired fertility. These endocrine-disrupting properties of plastic pose serious concerns for men's hormonal health.

For you to truly grasp the concept of how that affects you. An imbalance in hormone levels, such as testosterone or estrogen which are both hormones men have, may result in a range of symptoms including reduced libido, fatigue, muscle weakness, and fertility challenges. Additionally, such imbalances can manifest as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, increased body fat, and the development of breast tissue (known as gynecomastia). Now I don’t know about you. But developing breast tissue for men is something that is not normal and in addition, seeing your partner develop female-related symptoms as a result of their hormonal imbalances is not good for their health either.

    • Cells influence the brain's cognitive and emotional functions, our mood and appetite is affected by this estrogen imbalance. Serotonin and dopamine affect many of our pleasure reward circuits in the brain and when there is an imbalance of this it can lead to repercussions in bone health, muscle and mood, such tiny little things can have far-reaching consequences and yet we are not educated nor are the governments doing much to stop the plastic crisis. An imbalance in hormone levels can cause a wide range of problems for almost any system in the body and that's the concerning thing as we may not know what part of our body these microplastics may be affecting in our behaviour and functioning.

      Reproductive Disorders:

Plastic's impact on male fertility is a growing area of concern. Research suggests that exposure to certain plastic components may contribute to reproductive disorders, such as testicular dysfunction and impaired sperm production. Studies have shown an association between exposure to BPA and phthalates and abnormalities in testicular development, reduced semen quality, and an increased risk of infertility. The potential long-term consequences of plastic exposure on male reproductive health warrant attention and further investigation.

      • Semen Quality and DNA Integrity: Several studies have investigated the relationship between plastic exposure and semen quality. Elevated levels of BPA and phthalates have been linked to reduced sperm concentration, motility, and morphology. Additionally, plastic-induced oxidative stress may contribute to DNA damage in sperm, potentially increasing the risk of genetic abnormalities and adverse reproductive outcomes. The cumulative effects of plastic exposure on semen quality highlight the need for precautionary measures to protect men's reproductive health. We are literally talking about your ability to produce a child here, now you may think this might be intense but it's not even if there is a 5% chance of wanting a child in the future you should dedicate yourself to eliminating as much plastic as possible over time.

imagine your child not having the best chances of functioning normally or having some disorder or abnormality because you decided to choose what's easy, instantaneous and cheap over what you should be doing for normal basic health and ensuring the best chances for a healthy child or future. We have a large say and control over our health in every aspect. You need to take responsibility for yours. This isn't some fear-mongering tactic or some guilt trip, this is reality and in fact, there have been numerous studies on the effect that plastic has on animals even the devastating effects short exposure does to them and their next generation of offspring.

        • Suspected Carcinogenic Effects: Certain plastics contain chemicals classified as potential or known carcinogens, such as vinyl chloride and styrene. Occupational exposure to these substances, particularly in industries involved in plastic production and recycling, has been associated with an increased risk of developing various cancers, including lung, liver, and prostate cancer. While the direct link between plastic use and cancer in men requires further research, the presence of carcinogenic substances in plastic raises concerns regarding long-term health effects the question is do you want to find out what those effects are 10/20/30 years into the future or do you want to be at your most optimal health and fully present for your children and family and making sure they to have that choice.

        • Airborne Microplastics and Inhalation: Microplastics, small plastic particles, have become pervasive in the environment, and recent studies have detected their presence in the air we breathe. Inhalation of microplastics can introduce these particles into the respiratory system, potentially leading to inflammation, respiratory complications, and systemic effects. While the specific health risks of inhaling microplastics require more investigation, their presence in the air poses a potential concern for men's respiratory health.

Implementation of Plastic free chemical life

Understanding what different Plastic-based EDCs are and how we can avoid them and their effects.

Phthalates and Parabens: Present in personal care items like shampoos and lotions, associated with reproductive issues and hormonal disturbances.

Phthalates are commonly found in personal care products like cosmetics, shampoos, and fragrances, as well as in flexible plastics such as PVC pipes and food packaging. They act as plasticizers and are also present in certain medical devices. Exposure to phthalates is linked to reproductive issues, including reduced sperm quality in males and hormonal disturbances in both genders. Prenatal exposure is especially concerning as it can impact the development of male reproductive organs and lead to developmental abnormalities.

Effects: Allergic reactions, skin irritation, itching, hives and links to cancer

Alternative solution: Use personal care products labelled "phthalate-free" or "paraben-free." and avoid products including "Benz" or "phen"

Plastic products including products that have BPA and BPS: Used in plastics and can linings, linked to obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

Effects: mimic estrogen and disrupt hormonal balance. BPA is of particular concern. Their negative effects include links to health issues like obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Exposure, especially during pregnancy and childhood, raises concerns about developmental and reproductive impacts. Additionally, BPA and BPS can persist in the environment, affecting aquatic life.

Alternative solution: Choose glass, stainless steel, or BPA-free plastics for food and drink storage. Ideally, you want to have product alternatives that don't have any plastic at all.

Recap of Plastic and how it Affects Us.

Developmental and Reproductive Problems: Affecting both current and future generations.

Cancer and Other Health Risks: Including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

The Body: mood, muscle, hormone disruption, and cognitive abilities are possibly affected areas.

          The Change starts with you:

Addressing the plastic crisis requires collective action and a shift toward sustainable alternatives. Governments, industries, and individuals must embrace measures like reducing plastic consumption, improving waste management systems, and promoting the use of biodegradable and recyclable materials.

By choosing reusable products, supporting plastic-free initiatives, and advocating for policy changes, we can significantly reduce plastic pollution and safeguard our environment and health.

But it doesn't stop there. As individuals, we can do our part too. Now after reading this, you're probably thinking how do I do this or where do I start, this is all quite a lot and this seems like it can be a little costly. It might be or it might not depending on how you go about it. However, being mindful of these products and chemicals can reduce your exposure to EDCs and so protecting yourself and the environment.

If you think of it as starting from level 1 and then going to the next level of living plastic-free at each stage, then you can make those adjustments gradually as you start to level up yourself and pursue your purpose. However, overall these are the few suggestions we think would make a big change for your health and for the environment.

Make a list of all the plastic items in each room of your house:

this will allow you to be more aware of what is around you. With this list look at some of the items you can replace immediately at low cost with better alternatives such as bamboo, wood, metal, rock(silicone if necessary) etc and then with the costlier items look to slowly remove them as every month or so you order a replacement for them this way you can gradually replace your plastic and use better alternatives without making it drastic and expensive.

          Fix your water:

One of the big issues is water, whether that's tap water or bottled water, microplastics are present. Now you're thinking, well what do I drink then? The answer to this is FIX your tap water, go get a water filtration system whether this is a cheap one to start off with then buy a more expensive better-complicated water filtration system when you are able to.  Just make sure that you get any that removes plastics and does a good job of eliminating the other bad stuff this will suffice and is better than drinking plastic bottled water and or water straight from the tap which has a range of issues within itself. This will save you money and also save the amount of plastic you use as well as you can use stainless steel bottles or reusable better alternatives than cheap plastic bottles that are not designed to last very long or more than one use.

          Changing your shopping habits:

When going food shopping bring food hampers and food bags that are not made of plastic. When shopping for fruit and veg put them in paper bags or get them from the section where they are loose and not already packaged in plastic, meats and dairy and fish - go to the deli section where you can get them without them being in plastic, all of this is only if you can afford it though!

The next level up from this would be finding alternative stores online that sell plastic-free alternative items and also food shopping sites that are organic, come from farms and do not touch plastic packaging. Doing a little bit of research and exploring the area around you will yield better results than you realise. In my own experience, I just found out that we had a local plastic-free shop where you can go get food without plastic packaging and can even take your jars and fill them with washing up liquids, rice, pasta, spices, etc and it's been there for 3 years, we have treasures sitting within our own community and more often than not they have such a deep passion for making our world a better place so… go support them if you have local businesses like this, but also go online and find businesses that do the same and are better than these big corporations that do little to change or help with the issues of plastic.

Here at KINGS PIECE we also have to take accountability as our mailer bags are compostable and our boxers are made with natural fabrics however we too have plastic packaging that the boxers are wrapped in, which means we have our own responsibility of eliminating the use of plastics. Not to mention our Journals have fau leather as the cover so this too needs to be changed in future Journals and is at the forefront of our mind.

As we have said before you are the Man. The King of your own Kingdom and that means you have to be the pioneer for change and education. Your health and your future rely on it. Do you want a future filled with trash? Or a future filled with prosperity? The decision ultimately is yours.

If you choose action on his blog grab your notebook or Journal and write down a list of objects that you want to get rid of and swap out this month. Work towards that and keep repeating it until you find yourself at the point where you are satisfied with the levels of plastics you have in your life.

The world that we live in is crazy but choosing to eliminate certain objects and adapting a better lifestyle is the way forward for everyone.

This has been the ultimate guide for plastic. Wishing you good health for you and your future generations to come.

          You got this, my friend!
