Are You a Value-Driven Man?

Are You a Value-Driven Man?

Values are essential to live by - they guide us and shape the way we live. Our moral compass keeps us in check and gives us a set of rules to live by, as the concept of values remains a timeless and essential aspect of a man's character. Accountability and integrity stand as cornerstones, crucial for personal growth and societal well-being. Without them, we would be lawless, unaccountable and undefining as individuals and as a community.

Values are what makes a man a man, someone who can be respected and relied upon. Therefore, in today's article, we will be delving further into the scientific evidence that highlights why these qualities are indispensable to men who aspire to lead, inspire, and make a positive impact on the world. The most important takeaway from this article will be asking yourself the crucial question …What are your values?

Here are ours!

Inspiration: leading by Example

Scientific studies, such as a 2019 study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology [1], reveal the influential role of values in a man's ability to inspire and motivate those around him. Being an inspirational figure involves more than just words; it means embodying a positive role model. When a man aligns his actions and words with his deeply held values, he becomes a beacon of inspiration. Research indicates that such individuals are more likely to inspire and motivate others to reach their full potential.

The responsibility of leadership comes with leading by example, and men who live by their values often demonstrate resilience, integrity, compassion, and a continual pursuit of greatness, inspiring those in their sphere of influence. Whether you like it or not you will at some point be a leader, a reference point and or a nurturing figure. With this, you need to be headstrong and adhere to the values you hold close, so others can respect and learn from you. You will be a determining factor in others' success and growth.

Humanity: The Science of Empathy and Compassion

One of the core, defining values of masculinity is humanity. Research conducted by Dacher Keltner, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, emphasises the deep importance and impact of compassionate values [2]. It is not just about being happier and healthier; it's about contributing to more harmonious relationships and communities. Keltner’s research has shown that individuals who exhibit empathy and kindness are more likely to forge meaningful connections and positively impact their social circles. This underscores the importance of values such as humanity in shaping men's character. As men with big dreams, you will need a strong support system around you, and strong compassionate values will not only promote personal well-being but also allow you to foster deep, meaningful connections and positively influence your circles.

Participation in communities for a joint purpose is a fundamental value. A study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology [3], highlights the positive impact of community involvement on men's personal and collective growth. The study suggests that when men collaborate with others, combining diverse perspectives and talents, they collectively strive to create a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous world. Building communities with meaningful connections fosters support systems and networks that contribute to personal and collective growth.

In today's society, the increasing tendency toward isolation among men is a pressing concern with far-reaching consequences, not only for their individual well-being but for the broader fabric of our communities and society as a whole. Men, by nature, may find themselves becoming increasingly isolated and hesitant to reach out to others, often driven by fears of rejection or vulnerability. However, it's essential to recognise that every man deserves and should have a circle of friends, a collection of "bands of brothers" to rely on and socialise with frequently. The current societal trend often undervalues these connections, underestimating the long-term effects of men's isolation and an over-reliance on their partners to fill the social gap and level-headed/ truthful advice that one may need. Whether men are single or in relationships, it's imperative to seek out and actively be part of a community that provides the support, camaraderie, and bonding that is essential for well-rounded, fulfilling lives. In today's world, no man can, or should, attempt to navigate life's challenges and triumphs in isolation.

Research has repeatedly shown that men who actively engage in socialising with other men experience significant benefits for their mental health. Studies, such as a 2018 research paper in the "Journal of Men's Health", have established a strong connection between maintaining friendships and reduced risk of mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. These friendships serve as a vital source of emotional support and provide an avenue for men to share their thoughts and feelings, reducing the burden of emotional stress.

Moreover, maintaining a network of friends, often referred to as "social integration," has been linked to cognitive health. A study in the "Journal of the American Geriatrics Society" found that social interaction, particularly with friends, contributes to better cognitive function and can deter mental decline as men age.

The current societal trend often undervalues these connections, underestimating the long-term effects of men's isolation and an over-reliance on their partners to fill the social gap. Whether men are single or in relationships, it's imperative to seek out and actively be part of a community that provides the support, camaraderie, and bonding that is essential for well-rounded, fulfilling lives. In today's world, no man can, or should, attempt to navigate life's challenges and triumphs in isolation.

Building and maintaining friendships is not just a personal choice; it's a vital investment in one's own mental and emotional health. Moreover, it serves as a cornerstone for fostering stronger, more resilient communities and societal change. By actively participating in a community of friends, you can not only deter mental decline but also contribute to healthier, more supportive societies where individuals thrive both individually and collectively.

Integrity: The Moral Compass

Integrity is the unwavering cornerstone of a man's character. A study by Angela Lee Duckworth and David Scott Yeager, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, emphasises the role of integrity in guiding a person’s actions and upholding principles, even in the face of adversity. The study outright proves that men of integrity are more likely to command respect and trust, not only from others but also from themselves. A man's authenticity, as per this research, derives from his unwavering commitment to his deeply held values. If you want to achieve success and conquer your dreams, respect is non-negotiable and your unwavering determination in your values must be the foundation of your relationships.

Men who uphold their accountability are more likely to earn the trust and respect of those around them. This trust extends to their personal and professional relationships, contributing to enhanced leadership and effective teamwork. Have you ever found yourself losing respect for a friend you once trusted after they let you down and offered excuses for their decisions? Even though they are your friend, you lose respect or trust in their ability to pull through. It’s an unconscious process that happens to us all, and it can happen to you too. That’s why, not only to maintain your reputation but also in order to trust yourself, you must stick to your principles as best as possible.

Integrity is not just a moral ideal; it has tangible impacts on a man's life and relationships. Research conducted by Donelson R. Forsyth, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology[6], indicates that integrity is directly linked to a person's overall well-being. Men of integrity are more likely to experience greater life satisfaction, improved mental health, and enhanced self-esteem. Furthermore, men who act with integrity tend to form more positive and fulfilling connections with others.

Accountability and Values

When accountability and integrity merge with a man's deeply held values, they create a powerful synergy. Scientific evidence shows that men who align their actions with their values and accept responsibility for their choices and behaviours are more likely to lead purposeful lives. Men who prioritise their values are better equipped to stay true to their commitments and take ownership of their actions, reinforcing their accountability. This is powerful as it allows you to nurture strong relationships with others and, more than likely, will aid you in being successful and dependable in whatever field of work you choose as others will naturally look to you for knowledge, wisdom, guidance or leadership.

Our values at Kings Piece and men's values go hand-in-hand as accountability and integrity are the threads that weave a resilient, compassionate, and inspirational character. These qualities are not just abstract ideals but tangible factors that influence personal well-being, trust, and societal progress. Men who uphold these values alongside their deeply held beliefs become not only pillars of trust but also agents of positive change in the world. By integrating these qualities with their core values and principles, they inspire others, reinforce ethics, and create a lasting impact. So, with this knowledge equipped the best way to take actionable steps in discovering your values is to take a pen and paper and think about what your values are, and what you want them to be. Ask your peers, family and friends what they think your values are. With this, you can reflect on what good values you currently have, and consider which values you would like to integrate into your life.
